Cancellations filled their calendar one by one as stay-at-home orders were issued across the country. So the Carrolls had all of their employees pack up their equipment and return it to the company s headquarters in Dallas. They had no idea when business would be back. Kelsey Carroll came up with the idea to build custom hand sanitizer stations they could use when their live event business started up again. The couple, who have two toddlers, created Stand Up Stations to capitalize on their new business idea. Within 11 days, they had a product ready to sell. They converted their traveling employees into a remote salesforce and started selling to every business they could. In 2020, the company generated more than $7 million in sales. ....

Jahren will give a virtual keynote address in October as part of a series of year-long events hosted by the One Book program. One Book One Northwestern is hosted by the Office of the President, and has been an ongoing program at NU since 2005. It first began within Weinberg, but has since expanded to include the rest of the University. Each year, One Book selects a piece of literature and hosts lectures, discussions and movie screenings centered around themes mentioned in the year’s selection, all to engage the NU community in campus-wide dialogue. ....
Classes running longer than three weeks this summer will break for an extended Fourth of July holiday weekend, Provost Kathleen Hagerty announced in a Thursday email. The extended weekend will be two days longer than in past years, running from July 1 to 5, Hagerty wrote. Some Northwestern buildings will remain open but Norris University Center and the library will be closed, she added. Two- and three-week classes running during this time will not have the extended weekend, Hagerty wrote, but faculty and staff required to work on July 1 and 5 may take two extra days off at any point before August 31, 2022 as compensation. ....
Northwestern researchers developed a computing device to associate light with pressure, according to a University release. The device operates like a human brain. The study was published on April 30 in scientific journal Nature Communication and was conducted in collaboration with the University of Hong Kong. The National Science Foundation, the Hong Kong General Research Fund and the National Natural Science Foundation of China funded the project.
The modern computer, while very capable, cannot measure up to the human brain’s ability to execute complex tasks like pattern recognition and motor control, co-author and McCormick Prof. Jonathan Rivnay said in the release. The plasticity of the brain’s synapses are key to these abilities, he added. ....
Northwestern will announce a decision on potential vaccination requirements for students in early May and in-person expectations as early as June, according to a Thursday release sent to faculty and staff. The University plans to be in-person this fall to the extent that public health guidance will allow, a goal that University President Morton Schapiro. ....
