Summer camps set to reopen in Connecticut


Connecticut’s Office of Early Childhood has decided to authorize sleepaway camps to operate this summer in accordance with the CDC’s April 24 guidelines, allowing for sleepaway camps to be run for the first time since 2019.
 “The present guidance is intended to help camp administrators operate camps while preventing the spread of COVID-19 and protecting campers, their families, staff and communities,” the CDC summer camp guidelines said.
The camp reopenings are not unconditional; the guidelines would require campers and counselors to separate into isolated cohorts, hold most activities outside and wear masks for most of the time. Campers and counselors need either proof of vaccination, or a negative COVID-19 test to attend a camp. ....

A year of lockdown has summer camp waitlists overflowing

This year, Camp Augusta, an overnight camp in Nevada City, California, has more than 500 campers on its waitlist the longest the list has been in two decades. Parents who a couple months ago were inquiring about how often equipment will be sanitized now are more interested in how Augusta plans to make camp feel as normal as possible, the director, Randy Grayson, said.
And campers have made clear what they are hoping for: a summer free from worries about the coronavirus pandemic.
“Nearly all of them mention the impact of Covid on their lives and how they’re looking forward to the opposite of it,” Grayson said. “They mention how they’re excited for the summer and to be with their friends, having fun outside, and effectively, Covid not existing in their lives.” ....
