Ten new fires were discovered in the northwest region by the early evening of July 24, 2021, according to Aviation, Forest Fire, and Emergency Services. 
At the time of this update, there were 137 active fires in the northwest region. 44 fires were not under control, 8 fires were being held, 26 fires were under control and 59 fires were being monitored.
The wildland fire hazard is high to extreme in the western portions of the region as well as an area of far north Nipigon district and low to moderate in the eastern portions of the region. 
The newly discovered fires:
Fort Frances 82 has been declared out at 0.1 hectares and was located near Burdiff Lake. ....

Keewaywin First Nation in northern Ontario will no longer recognize Canada Day as a celebration and will instead mark it as a day of mourning until the federal government investigates the grounds of all former residential schools.
Moving forward, the nation said July 1 will be a day to remember the children and families who were affected by residential schools and to recognize the role that the Canadian government and churches played in the attempted genocide of Indigenous People. ....

In an old warehouse along Thunder Bay s waterfront, four shipping containers are being cut open, and refurbished into a new home.

Four of the M40 shipping container homes, designed and built by Mod Box NWO Inc., will be delivered in the coming weeks to Keewaywin First Nation.(Supplied by Mod Box NWO Inc.)
In an old warehouse along Thunder Bay s waterfront, four shipping containers are being cut open, and refurbished into a new home.
Their destination is Keewaywin First Nation, about 580 km northwest of Thunder Bay. The four shipping containers will become single-bedroom homes. ....
