It s not just us responding to a moment but us saying there s a new way, a better way to do things, Lucas said. The city plans to create a temporary tiny homes village for the unhoused, giving folks a chance to get back on their feet until longer-term affordable housing is available. By creating this project, what we are doing is starting to warm them up and get them ready for the next step, said Houston DeFoe, president for Merging KC, the company helping to build the homes. The tiny homes village will have about 140 beds with caseworkers, and security on-site 24/7, along with showers and laundry.
