Oddar Meanchey provincial authorities stopped residents from cultivating areas in more than 7,000ha of land in four communes in Samrong and Chongkal district, Oddar Meanchey province as the land will be reforested by a private company.
Provincial Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries director Soth Sisokhean said the land, located in the communes Pongro and Chongkal in Chongkal district and the communes of Samrong and Konkriel in Samrong district, will be reforested in partnership with San Heang Company according to government guidelines.
But he said some residents have been misinformed by individuals about land ownership, and now depend on the land for their livelihoods. Authorities have recently notified them to stop using the land.

Travel ban has trouble-free start

In contrast to the travel ban imposed around Khmer New Year in 2020, this year only a small number of people tried to beat the deadline and leave Phnom Penh for their hometown after the government banned unnecessary inter-provincial travel for 14-days, according to several provincial officials.
Prime Minister Hun Sen on April 6 ordered a temporary ban on inter-provincial travel and the closure of all tourism, leisure and entertainment sites and venues throughout the country from April 7 to April 20 in order to curb the ongoing Covid-19 outbreak.

PHNOM PENH, April 6 (Phnom Penh Post/ANN): The recent curfew and restrictions imposed in the capital and other Covid-19 hotspots were intended to break the chain of transmission, Ministry of Health spokeswoman Or Vandine said as municipal and provincial authorities issued new directives banning certain activities during the upcoming Khmer New Year holiday.
In Phnom Penh, governor Khuong Sreng urged residents to stay home and refrain from travelling to other provinces.
He noted that the 8pm-5am curfew scheduled to end on April 14 could be extended if people are careless in the lead-up to the holiday and the virus continues to spread.
Disposal teams have burned 1.6 tonnes of the 16 tonnes of unexploded ordnance (UXOs) that were retrieved from a warship sunk in the Mekong River in Kampong Cham province during the civil war period of the early 1970s. The remaining ordnance will be neutralised and preserved for museum displays.
Mey Sophea, head of the UXO Clearance Unit of the National Centre for Peacekeeping Forces and Explosive Remnants of War Clearance (NPMEC-ERW), said on April 6 that the specialist team only burned the old and decayed or rusty ammunition, since it would soon deteriorate anyways. Items burned included artillery rounds, mortar shells and bullets among other varieties.
