R-Type Final 2 is only a month away and as that date approaches, we re slowly getting new information coming through. After releasing a new gameplay trailer last month and announcing a Special Chronicle Box , lead designer Kazuma Kujo has given us a better idea of what to expect.
Speaking with Eurogamer for a recent interview, Kujo was asked whether R-Type Final 2 would follow traditional R-Type gameplay - as opposed to recent Bullet Hell trend within shoot em ups - and he gave a pretty enthusiastic response:
It s definitely coming away a little bit from the danmaku genre and is going to have a more traditional flow. Even if danmaku was all the rage, R-Type would never be that kind of game! ....

There are shooting games, and there are
shooting games. Irem s 1987 R-Type can t exactly claim to be the first of its kind, and you could well argue there are more widely acclaimed shooting games, but you d be hard pushed to find any as iconic as this stately sci-fi venture. Cold, composed and challenging, it s the archetypal 80s shooter, and a prime example of the genre in its pomp.
The popularity of shooting games would wane throughout the 90s, however, and by the turn of the century those in charge of the series wondered whether it had a future at all. Which explains the brilliantly fatalistic air that hangs over R-Type Final, the 2004 entry that was imagined as a full-stop for the series. ....

It’s been rather a long wait but R-Type Final 2 will now launch in western territories on April 30th via publisher NIS America. The game is coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC via three different platforms, Steam, the Epic Games Store, and GOG.
Pre-orders for the consoles versions of the “Inaugural Flight Edition” which include an art booklet and a soundtrack CD are up on Amazon UK and will set you back £50.

First announced by developer Granzella in April 2019 the game then vanished from radars for quite a while until it popped back up in October 2020. By then NIS America were onboard as pubishers and the game had Spring 2021 window. ....

Hello! Welcome back to a new regular feature where we write a little bit about some of the games we ve found ourselves playing over the last few weeks. This time: an R-Type off-shoot, a landlord game and a bit of Trials.

I got to interview a bit of a hero of mine in the early hours of Tuesday morning - Irem alumni and R-Type Final director Kazuma Kujo - and I kept myself up by partaking in some tangential research. There are so many gems in Irem s back catalogue, and a fair few of them I m ashamed to admit I d never even played before. Games like X Multiply, a glorious offshoot from R-Type that gets to the heart of why I love shooting games so very, very much. ....
