Plan to restrict protests sparks fierce debate among Adver readers


NEW laws could give more power to police to restrict peaceful demonstrations in the UK in order to “safely manage protests”.
As part of the new Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill, the government has said it wishes to “prevent serious disruption caused by protests” in the wake of recent Black Lives Matter and Extinction Rebellion demos.
One of the measures includes a new legal definition of “serious disruption”, which police can then use to restrict protests.

On Monday, Boris Johnson announced his route out of the latest Covid lockdown including when children could return to schools and when shops could reopen.
The last date in the diary is June 21 when the prime minister hopes to finally remove all social distancing restrictions and even reopen nightclubs as well as large sporting events.
Non-essential retail as well as personal care businesses such as hairdressers could reopen as soon as April 12 with the rule of six coming into force at indoor gatherings on May 17. ....
