Covid: Can the arts lead the green recovery from the pandemic?

BBC News By James FitzGerald image captionThe London Sinfonietta warming up for its pedal-powered show, Houses Slide As the arts and culture sector attempts to recover from the devastating impact of the pandemic, some creatives are making eye-catching attempts to prevent another crisis - this one environmental. The likes of artists and musicians certainly have the power to influence others behaviour. And some of them are finding that climate action is actually making their work more marketable too. But other organisations face an uncertain future due to Covid - with some struggling to return to business at all. In June 2020, hundreds of creatives signed an open letter calling for a green recovery from Covid. It was organised by Julie s Bicycle (JB), a non-profit organisation working on sustainability in the creative industries. Founder Alison Tickell believes momentum has been building over the last year.

Hepworth Wakefield Spring Flower Festival

Museums in many countries remain closed, but at least spring has sprung. This week’s Apollo Art Diary picks out four arty gardens to enjoy…  Perhaps not surprisingly, given the organic, nature-inspired forms of her sculptures, Barbara Hepworth was a keen gardener throughout her life. At the Hepworth Wakefield, the gardens this spring have been planted with Thalia narcissus – thought to be the only variety the artist allowed in her garden – as well as lungwort, and a variety of tulip species. From 19 April–2 May the museum is hosting a range of online talks, on the history of gardens, tips for your own, and other subjects, to raise funds to help its cultural gardener Katy Merrington with upkeep. For those who can’t get along to see for themselves, Hepworth Wakefield is also releasing a series of photographs that show the gardens bursting into life. Find out more from the Hepworth Wakefield’s website.

Dismiss By Megan Backhouse Save Normal text size How our gardens could be, as opposed to how most of them actually are, has always been the main focus of the biennial Australian Landscape Conference, and last month’s event was no different. With more than 16 talks over two days, much ground was covered and, unlike in previous years, at least half of it was Australian. Fleur Flanery, who acquired the conference from Warwick and Sue Forge in 2019, had increased the number of local speakers.
