The new colourful mural at the Barton underpass has been warmly welcomed by locals. After the project was delayed due to the pandemic and various lockdowns, Katy Cockram, a trustee of the Barton Community Association, got the scheme back on track in January. The underpass walls were cleaned, and drainage cleared by Oxford Direct Services (ODS). The cleaning revealed some historic graffiti which was painted over by ODS, in preparation for the mural painting. How the underpass looked before. The installation would take the form of wooden panels around a metal frame, placed on a grassy area next to the sandpit at Barton recreation ground. The metal polls, which look similar to climbing frame, appear to be part of a kit that could be easily assembled. Once installed, artists or members of the public would be able to paint it with a mural. Planning documents show a photo of a similar art wall erected on Cowley Road in East Oxford decorated with a mural thanking the NHS for their work during the pandemic. ....
