Beth and Bryan Hirt are the new owners of Cuzzins Candy Store.
“We both have full-time jobs that we’re not quitting,” Beth is quick to point out. It’s been a commonly asked question as word has spread about their endeavor.
Beth is a physician’s assistant specializing in family medicine at Essentia Health, while Bryan teaches math at Century Middle School. ....

WORCESTER COUNTY, MD. – In 2020, an average of 74 cases of child abuse were reported monthly in Worcester County.
Child psychologist Kathy Seifert tells 47ABC that many may have gone unnoticed. “There are a high number of cases for child abuse and neglect and those may have not been picked up while we had been isolated from all our social contact,” Said Seifert.
However now that students are coming back to school – these cases are coming to light. “As children are getting back to seeing there physicians and professionals in school and so forth we seeing those numbers rise again for all types of abuse and neglect as well,” said Wendy Myers, Director of The Cricket Center. ....

Bill raising concerns as it could drop the age for minors to give consent to mental health professionals

MARYLAND- Among the many highly debated bills in this years Maryland General Assembly, is one that would allow 12-year-olds to make decisions regarding their mental health.
“We live in a world where we have to protect vulnerable people, we have to protect children and this is a very dangerous bill,” Heather Sinclair, a mental health advocate, said.
SB41 would drop the age for minors to give consent to mental health professionals from 16 down to 12.
Meaning they would be able to make decisions about their diagnosis, treatment, and more without permission from a parent.
But experts, have concerns about using simply age as a determining factor. ....

Underreported child abuse cases amid pandemic, local schools response during remote learning

SALISBURY, Md. – Often times teachers are the first to report at-home abuse.
But as remote learning has taken over and face-to-face interactions have become limited, some experts say many cases may be going undetected.
Child abuse reports are down in the state of Maryland, but again that doesn’t mean the abuse itself isn’t happening.
Psychologist, Dr. Kathy Seifert, argues there could be much more going on behind closed doors.
“Often child abuse and neglect is something that happens at home or in the neighborhood and so the numbers are down because so many times it’s going to be a teacher or counselor at school to report the problem,” said Dr. Seifert. ....
