Calm under pressure: the stroke physician

Mark Barber talks to Kathy Oxtoby about the variety in stroke medicine and teaching “the old fashioned way”

Geriatrician and stroke physician Mark Barber is passionate about helping patients who have had a stroke.

Describing the sudden and potentially devastating impact of stroke, he reflects on how a patient can go from being well to very unwell in a matter of minutes. “Lots of other conditions build up over months, even years, and patients may have time to come to terms with what’s happening to them,” he says. “With stroke, unfortunately, it happens like the flick of a switch. And the sudden loss of health can feel like a bereavement.”

As stroke lead clinician at NHS Lanarkshire, one of Barber’s goals is to help stroke patients achieve some kind of normalcy. “As a doctor working in this type of acute care you can make a real difference. People make some amazing recoveries it’s so satisfying to see,” he says.

When sociology informs medicine: the consultant neurologist

Consultant neurologist Bridget MacDonald talks to Kathy Oxtoby about how she incorporates sociology and anthropology into her medical practice

MacDonald has always been interested in medicine. “My mother was a midwife who brought me up with stories that taught me much about medicine.” She was also inspired by her … ....

Why I . . . make pottery

Clinical research fellow and emergency medicine trainee Charlotte Lindsay talks to Kathy Oxtoby about her love of making pottery

For Charlotte Lindsay, making beautiful pottery is not about perfection. In fact, it’s the imperfect pots she creates that she prefers to keep.

“It’s the nice stuff I make that people want to buy or that I give as gifts. It’s the weird rejects, the things that don’t quite work, that I like to keep,” says Lindsay, a clinical research fellow at Queen Mary University London and an emergency medicine trainee who is currently doing a doctorate.

“I still have my first pots there are a lot of very small vases and awkwardly sized mugs. They’re not very functional. But things that don’t come out as planned can still be beautiful,” she says.

Lindsay finds pottery “a bit like meditating.”

“I throw a lump of clay into the middle of the potter’s wheel and concentrate on what … ....
