Jane Lethlean Special to The Journal-Standard FREEPORT Roger Goodspeed of Freeport won a state award through the Monroe Arts Center s Wisconsin Regional Arts Program competition for his painting “Barn Silo,” which will be on display for the next week at the center and then displayed in September at a Wisconsin location yet to be determined. Goodspeed, who has been painting for much of his life, said he was pleased to be part of a program that recognizes artists for their work through the University of Wisconsin Division of Continuing Studies. “I used to take tours of barns when they held them a few years ago. I walked into this silo, looking at the light coming through filtered by the sun, and I came home and began painting, Goodspeed said. The competition was related to Wisconsin and I think about how many of the old barns and silos that is disappearing and I knew I had to depict this through my art.” ....

The Monroe Arts Center will offer virtual concerts throughout spring. The concerts will be available the second weekend of each month, March through June, free of charge. “It has been a year since the Monroe Arts Center shut its doors due to the global pandemic,” said Kathy Hennessey, executive director for MAC. “In that time, we have felt the support of the community every single day. These four concerts are our way of saying thank you to those who continue to care about the arts and specifically the Monroe Arts Center. We look forward to the day that is coming soon that we can welcome back our audiences in person.” ....
