Rosalynn Carter, née Eleanor Rosalynn Smith, (born August 18, 1927, Plains, Georgia, U.S.), American first lady (1977–81) the wife of Jimmy Carter, 39th president of the United States and mental health advocate. She was one of the most politically astute and active of all American first ladies. Rosalynn was the eldest of four children (two girls and two boys) born to Wilburn Edgar Smith, a mechanic and farmer, and his wife, Allie Murray Smith.
