Theatre Odyssey Awards First VERNA SAFRAN PRIVE to Jake Pettingell

The first Verna Safran Prize ($1,000) has been awarded to Jake Pettingell, a Sarasotan who attends Saint Stephen's Episcopal School, for his play THE REAL WORLD, set in a post-nuclear war era about a family of four living together in a military bunker. B-52s singer-songwriter Fred Schneider, who longtime SFF attendees will recall performed with his trailblazing new wave band at the festival in 2004, is the celebrity host of the Sarasota Film Festival’s block party in The Rosemary District, outside the festival’s brand new office. This event will feature performances by what’s being billed as “a host of notable musicians” with food trucks offering cuisine from around the world. Sarasota County chooses Bertha Palmer biography for One Book program

In recognition of the centennial of Sarasota County, the library system has chosen “Suncoast Empire: Bertha Honoré Palmer, Her Family and the Rise of Sarasota” as its One Book One Community selection for 2021.
Frank A. Cassell’s 2017 biography tells the story of Bertha Palmer, who was one of the wealthiest women in America when she traveled in 1910 to the small settlement of Sarasota from Chicago at age 61. Over the years, she invested in cattle and farming, turned marshlands, pine forests and tropical jungles into neighborhoods. She was a society queen who advocated for social reform and succeeded as an entrepreneur. ....
