About last thursday, we talked about gabriel conspiracy, richmond 1800, and the way it reflects the complexity of slavery. Slavery was a relationship between individuals, and it was endlessly complex. With gabriel, we saw some of the ways an enslaved person could enjoy some freedom within their bondage. Different practices of power influenced the way different people experienced slavery. Today we will talk through some of those practices of power. Our Big Questions today are broadly about this. We will come back to these questions at the end of class, questions about the way labor influence lives of enslaved people in the south, and the particular tools available to both enslaved people and slave owners in power struggles.
