Despite assurances to the Girl Scouts that it would not, the Boy Scouts was considering coed scouting in 2017 as its enrollment declined and as it headed toward a mountain of sexual-abuse claims from current and former members. The Girl Scouts is suing the Boy Scouts for trademark infringement for using universal terms such as scouts and scouting in its efforts to reach girls. The girls organization also argues that the Boy Scouts coed recruiting has confused the public about the groups separate identities, which is especially harmful as the Boy Scouts go through bankruptcy proceedings meant to protect some assets from the 95,000 abuse claims pending against them.
