Formerly homeless valedictorian wants to help students like her

FALL RIVER Bristol Community College’s 2021 valedictorian is using her personal experiences to help first generation college students like her navigate the challenges of getting an education.
“I know how important (the college) has been in lifting up my spirits and how important my education will be in changing my life,” said Katherine Haley, a Fall River native who is about to earn a degree in psychology.
For Haley, who spent her younger years in and out of homeless shelters and is in recovery from drug addiction, the path to becoming a college graduate has been a bumpy one. But, she said, the acceptance and support she received from Bristol Community College made a huge difference. ....

Bristol Community College plans virtual commencement ceremony

FALL RIVER Bristol Community College will celebrate its 54th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 22, at 5:30 p.m., on Bristol’s 2021 Commencement website, Facebook and YouTube pages. The ceremony’s unique virtual format will feature new additions, including fun “watch party” packages sent to each graduate with their cap, gown and special celebratory items.
Over the last several months, Bristol Community College has been working hard to determine and plan the best and safest way to celebrate its graduates’ achievements in a unique virtual ceremony.
While the college had hoped to hold an in-person ceremony, given the continued uncertainty of the pandemic, the projected number of participants and the time that it takes to plan a large-scale event such as Bristol’s commencement ceremony, the college will continue forward with its plan to host a personalized, virtual commencement ceremony on the event’s original date May 22. ....
