Victoria has entered lockdown five times over the past 18 months, closing non-essential businesses. Business Kyneton president Kate Fairley said businesses in the shire have had no option but to pivot their businesses online to remain trading. “The general consensus in the business community is that everyone’s been really hit hard, and people also have to juggle responsibilities like home-schooling on top of their work,” Ms Fairley said. “I have noticed the businesses that seem most resilient through this period are the ones that are being more active in their online engagement. ....

Last week, a further seven days of stringent lockdown measures were announced for Sunbury residents as Victoria’s latest COVID-19 outbreak ballooned to more than 60 cases. Located on O’shannassy Street in Sunbury, HomeGrown Gifts co-owner and mother of four Sharyn Snook has had to scale back her business hours to meet the new restrictions. “We’re disappointed and a bit frustrated,” Ms Snook said. “You can’t argue with the need to protect people’s health, but it worries me that the mental health of small businesses doesn’t seem to be as important as the physical health of the general public. ....

International student tuition has been raised substantially over last three years, including increases of 20 and 15 per cent in 2018 and 2019 respectively The University of Victoria Board of Governors voted on March 30 to approve the university’s operating budget for 2021-22, as well as its budget framework for the next three years. Once again, the budget included tuition increases for all students as well as funding for bursaries, mental health supports, and an associate vice-president Indigenous.
