(Photo: Anadolu Agency) ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – Human Rights Watch (HRW) has called on Turkish authorities to stop the illegal transfer of Syrian nationals, including Arabs and Kurds, from northeast Syria for prosecution in Turkey. Turkey and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Army have arrested and illegally transferred at least 63 Syrian nationals from northeast Syria to Turkey to face trial on serious charges that could lead to life in prison, HRW said in a report published on Wednesday. The rights group urged Turkish authorities to “immediately allow all detainees in their custody to contact their families, whether in Turkey or outside of it, and update families on their status.” ....

(Photo: Reuters) ERBIL (Kurdistan 24) – The United Kingdom’s Ministry of Defense (MoD) has revealed that the UK Royal Air Force hit several Islamic State fighters north of Bayji in Iraq over the weekend. The UK’s defense ministry said in a statement on Saturday that despite the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, Royal Air Force aircraft have continued “regular armed reconnaissance missions to support the enduring work of the Iraqi security forces to prevent any resurgence of the [ISIS] terrorist movement within their country.” On Jan. 24, a coalition surveillance aircraft located some Islamic State fighters “based in two caves some 10 miles north of Bayji,” according to the statement. In response, two British Typhoon FGR4s were tasked to strike them. ....

The airstrikes targeted the village of Shene in Qaladize district, located in northeastern Sulaimani province, Bakir Waysi, the head of the Halsho sub-district, told Kurdistan 24. “The airstrikes targeted the village and its peripheries,” Waysi noted, adding that the airplanes are still flying over the area. The civilian and material damages are unknown “because we are unable to reach the village yet,” the mayor said, highlighting the fear and frustration among villagers. ....
