Bengaluru: With Cyclone Tauktae wreaking havoc in the coastal districts of the state, Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa on Sunday asked district in-charge Ministers and Deputy Commissioners to visit affected areas and carry out rescue and relief works.
Yediyurappa on Sunday called Ministers incharge of coastal districts and Deputy Commissioners there and took stock of the situation there, his office said in a statement. ....

Bengaluru, May 3 : The Karnataka government has ordered a probe into the tragic death of 23 Covid patients due to interruption in the supply of medical oxygen at the Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) in Chamarajanagar district on Monday.
According to the notification issued by N. Manjunath Prasad, Principal Secretary in the Revenue Deparrtment, senior IAS officer Shivayogi Kalasad, who is also Managing Director of Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC), has been appointed as the inquiry officer to probe the incident.
Describing the incident as a matter of grave concern, Prasad, who is also the member secretary of the Karnataka Disaster Management Authority, directed Kalsad to file a detailed report within three days. ....

In a tragic news, as many as 23 COVID-19 patients died in Chamarajanagar Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) in Karnataka s Chamarajanagar district on Monday due to an interruption in the supply of medical oxygen.
CIMS Director DM Sanjeev told reporters that due to a shortage of oxygen, 23 patients who were on ventilator support and needed a high flow of oxygen have died. ....

Covid: Karnataka hospitals stare at imminent shortage of medical-grade oxygen


Hospitals in Karnataka are staring at an imminent shortage of medical-grade oxygen, with the rising number of Covid-19 patients with severe respiratory distress threatening to increase the demand fourfold.
While the total consumption of medical-grade oxygen in the state was around 280 tonnes on Saturday, it had crossed 300 tonnes on Monday, sources in the state health department said.
“Our statewide requirement could go up to 1,200 tonnes per day if the spike continues in this manner for another couple of weeks,” a health department official, who declined to be named, told The Telegraph on Tuesday.
Karnataka has seven plants that manufacture liquid oxygen, with a total daily capacity of 810 tonnes. ....

Centre's delay renders Disaster Mitigation Funds useless

For Karnataka, which is hit by natural disasters year after year, funds allocated to mitigate them will be of little help thanks to the Centre’s delay in issuing guidelines on how they should be used.
The 15th Finance Commission had granted Rs 200 crore under the State Disaster Mitigation Funds (SDMF) for projects to protect assets, settlements and eco-systems.
Similarly, around Rs 70-crore projects under National Disaster Mitigation Fund (NDMF), which includes Rs 50 crore for an Urban Flood Forecasting and Mitigation System in Bengaluru and a Rs 20 crore project to reduce the impact of droughts, have also not taken off. ....
