He defended his action, saying he has been treating Covid patients for a year and questioned the rationale behind the government’s guidelines in this regard. Following a complaint by the store, Mangaluru police have booked a case against Dr Bevinje Srinivas Kakkilaya under the Karnataka Epidemic Diseases Act, 2020. Medical associations have criticized the physician for the incident.

The positivity was much higher, at 48%, in Bengaluru but not the city’s highest so far (it was 55%). The state reported 38,603 fresh Covid-19 cases out of the 97,236 tests conducted in the past 24 hours, showing the decline in testing over the weekend. The tally was the highest among all states. Bengaluru reported 13,338 cases followed by Ballari (2,322), Hassan (2,324) and Mysuru (1,980). The state reported 476 deaths, including 239 from Bengaluru. The state’s daily case fatality rate stood at 1.2 %. The dead included 59 who died at home and 20 brought dead to hospital.

Representative image DAVANAGERE: Offline classes at Davanagere s Basavanahalli High School and College have been suspended after 26 students tested positive for Covid-19 on Saturday. The Karnataka government on Friday issued a fresh set of Covid-19 guidelines to curb the virus spreading in the state that said that classes from 6-9 will be suspended, gyms, swimming pools to remain closed, rallies, dharnas will be prohibited, and a maximum 50 per cent seating capacity in cinema halls will be allowed. In the districts of Bengaluru Urban and Rural including BBMP, Mysuru, Kalburgi, Dakshin Kannada, Udupi, Bidar and Hubali-Dharwad, the number of customers in pubs, bars, clubs, restaurants shall not exceed 50 per cent of the capacity.
