The coronavirus pandemic is straining many marriages  some to the breaking point. There are signs that separations and the divorce rate is rising as couples struggle with the emotional and economic fallout of the past year. According an article in WebMD last November, family lawyers surveyed in April and July reported a 25% to 35% increase in requests to start divorce proceedings compared to the same time in 2019.

Separation, divorce may fuel fear of abandonment in kids, study says

When children are caught between two bickering parents who are separating or divorced, their fears of abandonment increase regardless of parental relationships according to new research. Photo by geralt/Pixabay
Kids who see their parents bicker during a separation or divorce are more likely to develop a fear of abandonment, new research warns.
And even if a youngster feels close to one or both parents, that fear can still undermine his or her mental health down the road.

The findings stem from interviews with roughly 560 kids between 9 and 18 years of age. Parents and teachers were also interviewed. ....

According to researchers from Arizona State University, kids are more likely to struggle with mental health concerns when their divorced or separated parents are frequently arguing. 
“Conflict is a salient stressor for kids, and the link between exposure to interparental conflict and mental health problems in children is well established across all family types married, cohabitating, separated, and divorced,” said researcher Karey O’Hara.  ....
