‘We are done’: Rally decries wave of anti-Asian hate crimes in the Bay Area
SAN JOSE Recounting the harassment, discrimination and racism Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have endured for decades in the Bay Area, elected officials, community leaders and residents rallied in front of San Jose City Hall on Saturday to decry a wave of hate crimes that have rocked the region in recent months.
“It’s about making sure there’s visibility on this issue,” said Assemblymember Evan Low, a Democrat, who said many hate incidents against Asian and Pacific Islander residents are never reported to the police. ....

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Recounting the harassment, discrimination and racism Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders have endured for decades in the Bay Area, elected officials, community leaders and residents rallied in front of San Jose City Hall on Saturday to decry a wave of hate crimes that have rocked the region in recent months.
“It’s about making sure there’s visibility on this issue,” said Assemblymember Evan Low, a Democrat, who said many hate incidents against Asian and Pacific Islander residents are never reported to the police.
“Now is the time for non-Asian allies to stand up in solidarity with our Asian and Pacific Islander neighbors,” San Jose Councilmember Pam Foley, who organized the rally along with Low, told the crowd of about 200 people. “It is our responsibility to make it absolutely clear that hate has no place in our community, that racism and bigotry will not be tolerated in San Jose.” ....

Marin Woman Charged with Hate Crime

A woman from Marin County has been charged with a hate crime on suspicion of spitting on an Asian man in Mountain View last month. Police say 39-year old Karen Marie Inman of Greenbrae, unprovoked, walked up to the man who was dining outdoors, spat on him, yelled a racial slur at him, then told him to go back to where he “came from.” Earlier that day, she was accused of stealing food and clothes from a nearby market, and telling the owners she didn’t have to pay them because they’re Asian. The victim at the restaurant declined pressing charges, but Mountain View police decided to investigate anyway, citing the department’s hate crime policy.  Inman was arrested Friday and made her first court appearance Monday. This is one of many alleged hate crimes targeting the Bay Area’s Asian-American residents in recent months. ....

California woman charged with hate crime after spitting at Asian American, yelling slur

A California woman accused of spitting at an Asian American stranger and using an ethnic slur during an unprovoked attack was charged with a misdemeanor hate crime and battery.
Karen Marie Inman, 39, allegedly told the victim to go back to “where you came from” during the Feb. 13 incident, the Santa Clara District Attorney’s office said in a statement on Monday.
Inman reportedly approached the victim, a 36-year-old man of Asian descent who was dining outside with a friend in downtown Mountain View, and spat at him. She also allegedly used an ethnic slur.

She was initially recognized for reportedly taking food and clothing items at a store just steps away from the restaurant before the altercation, Mountain View police spokeswoman Katie Nelson said in a statement. ....
