Malibu children and families deserve an independent Unified School District

The hyphen in the title of Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District says it all. That punctuation mark symbolizes the uneasy tension of trying to connect two distinctly different, non-contiguous communities into a single school system. It also reminds us in Malibu that we are often an afterthought for Santa-Monica-centric school district decision-makers when it comes to educating our community’s children. We are out of sight, and frequently out of mind.
It is time we let each community govern its own schools and focus on its own needs and aspirations. On Saturday, April 17 we are presenting to the Los Angeles County Office of Education Committee on District Reorganization our petition to split from SM-MUSD and form our own school district. Our feasibility study shows convincingly that both Santa Monica and Malibu will benefit by being separate.

The farce Malibu City Council has become in the majority’s defense of despotic and devious City Manager Reva Feldman raises serious questions concerning the motives of Mikke Pierson, Karen Farrer and Paul Grisanti.
What indeed prompts the willful three to continually thwart a clarion call however shrill by concerned residents for transparency and accountability, accompanied by an independent review of City Hall by a qualified independent management firm, along with a citizen’s oversight task force?
As a skeptical journalist who also has been involved in some exacting public investigations, I have to speculate whether some ethical issues are raised in their relationships to the wily City Manager.

In her four years of her concocted incumbency as Malibu’s overpaid and under achieving City Manager, you had to be impressed by Reva Feldman’s chutzpah.
If only she had served Malibu with that shameless spirit instead of herself and her entourage of staff and special interests, she just could have persevered despite her fumbles in the Woolsey Fire and aftermath and conniving the council.
If you love Malibu you have to beware of Reva’s bag of bureaucratic tricks.
As revealed in a disputable letter from her lawyer, Feldman is now threatening to sue the city while also asking for the $375,000 in pay and benefits left on her remaining sweetheart of a contract that the last City Council gifted her despite the lone objections of Jefferson Wagner.
