Kaohsiung surgeon first female to head ICS

Kwan Aij-lie (關皚麗), a surgeon and professor at Kaohsiung Medical University’s Chung-Ho Memorial Hospital, has been elected the first female president of the International College of Surgeons (ICS).
The ICS is a non-governmental organization founded in Geneva, Switzerland, in 1935, and has its headquarters in Chicago.
The Republic of China has been a member of the ICS since 1944.
Kwan is the second Taiwanese to head the organization, after the late Lee Chun-jean (李俊仁), who practiced at National Taiwan University Hospital.

<strong>Man dies in scaffold collapse</strong>
A man was yesterday killed and six were injured in a scaffolding collapse on an oil terminal under construction at the Port of Kaohsiung. Another worker was still trapped as of press time last night. Their condition was described as lightly injured, but conscious. The Kaohsiung Fire Department said that it was notified at about 5:11pm of an incident at the port’s partially built oil terminal. COVID-19: Medigen COVID-19 drug to undergo booster trial

Medigen Vaccine Biologics Corp (高端疫苗) is to receive a subsidy of US$2.3 million from the international Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) to conduct a clinical trial in Taiwan to test its COVID-19 vaccine as a booster shot following full immunization with other brands, it said on Thursday.
The company plans to begin the trial once it is approved by the Food and Drug Administration, and aims to conduct an interim analysis by the end of March next year, it said.
The trial would be a “mix-and-match” type to test the safety and immunogenicity of different combinations of multiple brands of COVID-19 ....
