National Trails Day guided hikes and volunteer work projects will take place Saturday at Kanawha State Forest, Coonskin Park and the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve. Organized by the American Hiking Society and held annually on the first Saturday in June. In 2024, it was to be held on June 1, 2024. National Trails Day is meant to boost awareness and promote maintenance of public hiking trails across the United States.
Nearly two months after back-to-back ice storms slammed southwestern West Virginia, toppled trees and broken limbs still block hiking trails at some state parks and forests. On the Overlook Trail at Beech Fork State Park, a large pine tree just 100 yards from the trailhead prevents visitors from going any farther. Volunteers are scheduled to do more trail-clearing on the park during the second week in April.
