A Polish burglar has been denied an interpreter in court because he has lived in the UK for a decade and studied at university.
Due to an error, an interpreter booked for Kamil Panasewicz, 25, was sent to the wrong court, more than an hour away. Judge Nicolas Cartwright ruled that the proceedings should continue to sentence him without an interpreter.
The judge said that the man had moved to the UK at the age of 11 and had passed nine GCSEs, three A-levels and studied for two years at the University of Liverpool. ....

Why did Polish knifeman who went to UK uni need interpreter?


A POLISH knifeman claimed he needed a court interpreter - despite living in the UK since he was 11 and going to university here.
In a court cock-up the Polish interpreter booked for Kamil Panasewicz was sent to Hereford Crown Court instead of Worcester on Tuesday, at least an hour away by car or public transport.
However, Judge Nicolas Cartwright and the prosecutor, Andrew Wallace, questioned why one was needed in the first place, especially as Panasewicz, who suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, had better qualifications than many of the English defendants appearing before the courts.
After hearing legal arguments, the judge ruled that he should proceed to sentence without the interpreter. ....
