The new Speaker of Hackney, Cllr Michael Desmond. - Credit: Hackney council Hackney welcomes the return of Cllr Michael Desmond as the borough s latest civic representative. Cllr Kam Adams stepped down from the role he held for two years after Cllr Desmond was elected as Speaker of Hackney for a second time at the council s annual general meeting on April 27.  Cllr Desmond was last elected as speaker in 2013 and has lived in Hackney for nearly 35 years.  The Hackney Downs Ward councillor s top priorities for the coming year are fundraising for and promoting the aims of his two chosen charities, St Joseph s Hospice and Hackney Empire.

Hackney traders happy to welcome back customers on April 12

Super Grows Hair and Accessories shop in the Narroway on Mare Street. - Credit: Holly Chant Some Hackney residents like forager and legend Jonathan Cook, more commonly known as John The Poacher, took advantage of the recent lifting of some Covid restrictions by visiting a local pub. John, who lives near Springfield Gardens in Upper Clapton and has lived in Hackney for 38 years, said: “I thought I would drop in and have a pint at [Hackney Tap]. It’s nice to have a pint that’s on draught rather than having to have it out of bottles or cans.”  Jonathan Cook, known as John The Poacher, stopped by the newly opened Hackney Top to have a pint.

Hackney Speaker launches 5k walk to raise money for foodbanks Hackney Speaker, Councillor Kam Adams. Pic: Nick David The Speaker of Hackney, Kam Adams has launched a 5km fundraiser walk to support the borough’s foodbanks, which have been under pressure during the pandemic. The 5km walk, organised by Adams in collaboration with Hackney Foodbanks group, will take place virtually between May 10 and 17 with participants taking part in their homes or in an area of the borough, such as parks. A Hackney Council spokesperson told ELL: “Demand on Hackney Foodbank has increased from 8,106 people given help in 2019, to over 19,400 people in 2020, so they need our support now more than ever.”
