An Even Dozen For The Dragons

By Editor | February 16, 2021 By ERIC X. VICCARO PARK HILLS Smell that. That’s the aroma of home cooking in the very near future for the Ste. Genevieve High School boys’ wrestling squad. Twelve of 14 Dragons advanced to sectionals based off of top-3 performances at the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 2 District 1 Tournament this past Saturday at Central High School’s Foulon Field House. The Dragons also claimed their ninth district championship under award-winning head coach Jared Bonnell. “I’m really happy,” Bonnell said. “We had 12 wrestling in the finals, and we’re happy to have four champions.” The Dragon program has lofty standards, and the coach said some of the wrestlers thought they were mentally tight and others might have been too aggressive taking chances with their shots.

Three Dragon Girls Head To Sectionals

By Editor | February 10, 2021 By ERIC X. VICCARO CEDAR HILL For three Ste. Genevieve High School girls’ wrestlers, it’s destination sectionals. The Dragons’ Maggie Myracle (195-pound weight class), Izzy Basler (127) and Autumn Basler (117) all qualified for the Section 1 Meet set for St. Clair High School on Feb. 20. “I thought we had a good chance of advancing at least half,” Ste. Genevieve head coach Jared Bonnell said. “I thought all of our girls wrestled tough. These athletes work so hard, and you hate to see their seasons end.” Bonnell was especially proud of Autumn Basler, who has progressed through the past couple of weeks, gaining momentum while at the district meet at Northwest High School this past Saturday.

Dragons Continue With Early Success

By Editor | December 17, 2020 By ERIC X. VICCARO EVICCARO@STEGENHERALD.COM UNION The Ste. Genevieve High School boys’ and girls’ wrestling teams participated in the Union Tournament this past weekend. Maggie Myracle brought home the most impressive piece of hardware since she was named the girls’ tournament most outstanding wrestler on Friday evening. “I was very pleased with how the girls’ wrestled,” Ste. Genevieve head wrestling coach Jared Bonnell said. “Maggie managed to win the title at 195 by pinning all of her opponents, three of which were state qualifiers the year before.” Paityn Basler (107) and Izzy Basler (127) both attained bronze-medal finishes, and Brynna Wehner (117) and Dakotah Meadows (122) both took seventh.
