Breaking News | Uganda: Uganda Presidential Candidate Bobi Wine Arrested

Kampala Uganda’s National Unity Platform (NUP ) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, alias Bobi Wine, has been arrested.
Mr Kyagulanyi was arrested on Wednesday afternoon and was being driven to a police station in Kalangala Island area, according to the Daily Monitor.
The official Twitter account of the singer-turned-politician also announced the arrest.
“Bobi Wine and his entire campaign team arrested in Kalangala! Media blocked – Admin,” read a tweet on the handle.
The Monitor reports that efforts are currently underway to have the NUP candidate airlifted to Kampala from Kalangala Island.
However, police spokesperson, Fred Enanga said Mr Kyagulanyi was being transferred to his home in Magere, Wakiso district. ....

NAIROBI (Reuters) – Uganda opposition presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, and his campaign team were arrested on Wednesday and he said on Twitter that authorities returned him to his Kampala home in a military helicopter.
Wine and others were arrested on Kalangala Island in Lake Victoria, sparking protests at the site about 80 km (50 miles) southeast of Kampala. Police had earlier dismissed reports of the arrests, and said they had CCTV footage of Wine’s supporters deflating tyres of police motor vehicles, inciting violence and obstructing officers on duty. ....

Uganda police arrest Bobi Wine, tear gas supporters

Uganda opposition presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, and his campaign team have been arrested in Kalangala in the country’s central region, he said in a post on Twitter.
The arrests on Wednesday spurred protests at a field in Kalangala Island in Lake Victoria where a helicopter was parked and which Wine’s supporters said they believed would be used to fly him back to the capital Kampala.
Police fired tear gas at the crowd who were protesting.
“They are firing even now to disperse people gathering on roads,” a witness, who did not want to give his name for security reasons, told Reuters news agency. ....
