Ruling LDF heading for a historic win in Kerala

1869 Thiruvananthapuram, May 2 The ruling CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front in Kerala is all set to retain power as it is leading at least in 94 of the 140 assembly seats as counting is still in progress. If they win, they will buck the over four-decade-old trend of swinging between the Communists and the Congress-headed UDF in the southern state. As per the Election Commission figures, the LDF is ahead in 85 seats, while the opposition Congress-headed UDF is leading in 44 segments and the BJP-led NDA in three constituencies. The Left front is far ahead of its rivals in 10 of the 14 districts as per the latest figures.

Mohan Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wins Dharmadam by a margin of 50,123 votes Kannur district turned red on Sunday as the Left Democratic Front swept the Assembly elections by winning nine of the 11 constituencies. The LDF managed a comfortable win in Payyanur, Kaliyassery, Taliparamba, Kannur, Azhikode, Mattanur, Dharmadam, Koothuparamba, and Thalassery constituencies. The United Democratic Front managed to retain its sitting seats in Irrikur and Peravoor while losing the Azhikode constituency to the LDF.

Subhash on Thursday, in the wake of violent incidents following the murder of Mansoor, a Muslim Youth League member, at Koothuparamba, on Tuesday, the election day. Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) general secretary Abdul Kareem Cheleri said that even 48 hours after the murder, the culprits had not be apprehended. He said the party would launch an agitation from Thursday till the accused were arrested. “The police have registered a case against only those detained by local people at the site where Mansoor was murdered,” he said.
