A former Head of State, retired Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, has attributed the rising insecurity in the country to the proliferation of weapons, saying an estimated six million illegal arms are currently in circulation.
Abubakar, who is also the Chairman of the National Peace Committee (NPC), raised the alarm on Wednesday at a dialogue session with key stakeholders in Abuja.
According to him, the proliferation of weapons has aggravated insecurity in the country and led to over 80,000 deaths.

IPI Nigeria Approves Constitution

The General Assembly of the International Press Institute (IPI), Nigerian Chapter, has approved a constitution for its operations in the country.
The body said in a statement issued yesterday that the approval was given at a meeting of IPI held both virtually and physically and hosted by Daily Trust Newspapers on Tuesday in Abuja.
IPI- the global network for senior journalists, publishers, seasoned broadcasters and communication experts- is headquartered in Vienna, Austria and operates under a global constitution.
The Nigerian chapter, otherwise referred to as the Nigerian National Committee, has domesticated the IPI constitution to suit its environment. ....

Sawo, Gambian Lawyer, Receives $10,000 Daily Trust African of the Year Award

Mr. Mogae, a former President of Botswana, had mandated Mr. Yusuf to travel to Banjul and make the presentation on his behalf, owing to travel challenges across many parts of the world in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In normal times, the award ceremonies are held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, where the Daily Trust’s headquarters is located.
Announcing the decision to confer the 2020 Daily Trust African of the Year award on Ms Sawo, Mr. Yusuf said the Gambian lawyer won the award as a result of her “consistent work to end violence against girls and women, including child marriage and female genital mutilation”. ....
