Bay Area Reporter :: Out in the World: Blinken confirmation brings new hope for LGBTQs globally

The Senate confirmed Blinken with overwhelming bipartisan support 78-22 January 26. Blinken, 58, responded with affirmative responses to Senator Edward Markey s (D-Massachusetts) questions, signaling a U-turn for U.S. foreign policy as the country s global representative during his hearing. In 2019, Markey, an LGBTQ ally, introduced the GLOBE Act (H.R. 3874, S. 3004), which aims to build a framework to protect LGBTQ rights worldwide through U.S. diplomacy. Blinken was direct and clear in his goals to fill the vacant Special Envoy for the Human Rights of LGBTI Persons position and elevate it to an ambassador role, repudiate the Commission on Unalienable Rights, and allow embassies to again fly the rainbow flag during Pride Month.

'Rewarding Experiments, Strong Relationships, Risky Maneuvers': Art Dealer Nicola Vassell on the Ingredients of Success

Nicola Vassell. Image courtesy Nicola Vassell. Photo: Luigi Cazzaniga. Few people in the art world have had a career as complex as Nicola Vassell’s. After leaving Jamaica for New York in the late ’90s to pursue a career as a fashion model and culture writer, Vassell landed some of the art industry’s most coveted roles, including directorial positions at Deitch Projects and Pace gallery, two New York art-world institutions. While at Deitch, Vassell worked with then-emerging artists such as Sterling Ruby and Dan Colen to curate “Substraction,” an exhibition chronicling the grit of New York life post-9/11, while also overseeing the careers of artists like Kehinde Wiley, Tauba Auerbach, and Nari Ward. At Pace, she worked with the likes of Adam Pendleton, Robert Irwin, and Raqib Shaw.
