The Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways is organising the Maritime India Summit- 2021 (MIS 2021) from March 2 to 4, in virtual mode. This was disclosed here on Monday by Viskhapatnam Port Trust Chairman K. Rama Mohan Rao, at a press meet.
Giving details of the summit, he said that it is aimed at positioning Indian maritime sector on par with international standards by attracting domestic as well as international investments. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the summit, in virtual mode. ....

The Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) has unveiled plans to expand and strengthen its fleet of dredgers to meet the future demands of ports in India, The Hindu reports.
At present, DCI owns 10 dredgers of different sizes and capacities. It is equipped to handle 60 million cubic metres of sand per year, while the requirement for ports that need annual dredging is close to 105 million cubic metres.
“This is likely to grow to 160 million cubic meters in the next 10 years and to meet the demand, we need to expand our fleet and enhance the capacity of the existing fleet,” said ....

Five A.P. varsities to be upgraded into MERUs

With the National Education Policy (NEP)’s thrust on Multidisciplinary Education and Research Universities or MERUs to create model institutions on par with the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs), the AP State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE) has listed five universities in the State to be upgraded into MERUs in the first phase.
They are Andhra University, Sri Venkateswara University, Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU)-Kakinada, JNTU-Anantapur, and Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT).
“These institutions will be groomed in a manner that they will aim to attain highest global standards in quality education. The focus will be on research and innovation,” says K. Rama Mohan Rao, Vice-Chairman, APSCHE. ....

The government is in two minds, whether to continue importing the nitrate or cut down imports and increase domestic production
 Since Beirut blast, only the public sector Indian Detonators Limited and Special Blasts, a private entity, got permission from PESO to unload and evacuate ammonium nitrate from ships.
VISAKHAPATNAM: Once the last of four ships unloads its ammonium nitrate cargo at the Visakhapatnam Port, further unloading of consignments, if permitted by the government, may be only from Paradeep Port in Odisha, shipping sources said.
They maintain that the government is in two minds, whether to continue importing the nitrate or cut down imports and increase domestic production. Currently, only about seven lakh tonnes of nitrate is being manufactured within the country. ....
