Couple completes long-planned purchase of historic Rockland schooner

Dating back to 1927 and homeported in Rockland, the Schooner J.&E. Riggin is part of the largest fleet of working windjammers in the U.S.
A couple who are both licensed as ship captains are the new owners of a historic passenger schooner in Rockland, and are preparing to set sail this season under COVID-19 guidelines.
Captains Jocelyn Schmidt and Justin Schaefer bought the Schooner J.&E. Riggin, a 120-foot ship built in 1927, from Captains Jon Finger and Annie Mahle for an undisclosed price.
Finger and Mahle are a married couple who owned the boat for more than 20 years. Mahle was the vessel’s cook, has written several cookbooks, and her food and the Riggin have been featured in dozens of national media outlets.  ....

Couple buys historic schooner and plans windjammer cruises this summer

ROCKLAND The new owners of the historic Rockland-based schooner J. & E. Riggin are looking forward to their first season of taking passengers around the Midcoast on their own vessel, confident that people are looking for experiences outside.
But Capts. Justin Schaefer and Jocelyn Schmidt – who took ownership of the 120-foot Maine schooner on Feb. 5. – are no strangers to the local windjammer fleet or the Riggin.

Schaefer first stepped aboard the Riggin as a 13-year-old passenger when his parents booked a trip 15 years ago. A native of Long Island, New York, Schaefer said he had been on dinghies and 30- to-40-foot yachts but there was something different when he went aboard the Riggin. ....
