The fire is burning east of calistoga and st. Helena. Kpix 5s anne makovec has been on the firelines all day and reports more than 1,000 firefighters are attacking the wildfire from land and air. Reporter this is what much of the 3200 acres that were burned looked like today, not a lot of active flames but plenty of smoldering debris that still poses a risk today. In pope valley. It exploded into a Massive Wildfire and jumped several roads and burned five buildings. It is burning in both napa and lake counties. And from its behavior so far, it is proving as you can see very dangerous. Ask. We are seeing fires burn with intensity that we typically see later in the year. You add weather conditions, hot temperatures, low humidities, strong winds and fires are going to burn much faster than this one today. Reporter as far as the evacuations, most of the homes that were evacuated are in the berryessa estates subdivision that is in pope valley. There are two shelters set up, one at Middletown High School and the other at pope valley road at pope valley school. And at that point, it just started getting bigger, really fast. Reporter alarmingly fast. Within just a few hours, the flames would consume 2500 acres in rural pope valley fueled by grass, trees and rocky terrain left desiccated by a punishing drought. This firefighters told us is not your typical july wildfire. We are seeing fires that we would see later in the year. Hot conditions, low humidity, strong winds and fires will burn faster than this one. Reporter an aggressive unpredictable intensity that firefighters have been struggling for hours to try to control. Heres one of the unique problems firefighters are dealing with, spot fires like this hopping all along the hillside.
