Invasive plants turned sculptures: new art installation at Marks Cove

Shea and Cifello were at the Marks Cove Conservation Area working on the sculpture from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 25. Wareham residents who visit the Marks Cove Conservation Area in the coming weeks will be greeted by two sea serpents, which appear to emerge from the ground along the walking path. But as seamlessly as the sculpture blends into the landscape, creating the large art installation made up of invasive plant species required hours of work. Volunteers and a Wareham Land Trust staff member worked from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to bring the two serpents to life on Saturday, April 24. While the serpents might not be totally complete yet, they’re well on their way to being finished.

Invasive Plant Art Build

A previous invasive sculpture created by the artist. The public is invited to join local artist Justin Cifello in creating a sculpture out of invasive species. Utilizing plants harvested at a previous workshop, we will learn some basic techniques to create various artworks from wreaths to large scale sculpture. Attendees will be invited to contribute to a large scupture to remain on site at Mark s Cove. This program is part of a Week of programming called “Wild for Wareham” that is taking place from April 17th - 24th. This week is designed to get you out and exploring the beautiful natural areas that surround you. 

Teachings from the Trail: Basic Botany with Justin Cifello

Mar 3, 2021 Event has passed The Wareham Land Trust is hosting a variety of walks with volunteer naturalists focused on educating participants about the great outdoors. All the walks are free, but the number of participants is limited due to covid-19 so pre-registration is required. On Friday, March 12, learn basic botany with Justin Cifello at the Marks Cove Conservation Area from 2 to 3:30 p.m. Blake Dinius will introduce participants to winter bugs during a Saturday, March 20, walk from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Douglas S. Westgate Conservation Area in West Wareham. On Saturday, March 27, Chance Perks will talk trees on a walk at the Tweedy and Barnes Conservation Area from 1 to 2 p.m.
