The Fiji Times » Lawyer files for recusal of judge

Vishaal Kumar Photo: 123RF The lawyer representing a woman who allegedly facilitated the trafficking of 17 Fiji citizens has filed an application for recusal of the judge hearing the case. Seta Sanjana Ram is charged with her sister, Geeta Anjana Chandar, who is overseas, with 17 counts of trafficking in persons, 16 counts of obtaining property by deception and two counts of money laundering. Ms Ram appeared at the High Court in Suva yesterday before judge Justice Thushara Rajasinghe. Her lawyer Mohammed Yunnus told the court his request for recusal was based on the abolition of the assessor system and for fairness. Justice Rajasinghe told the defence that the role of the judges had not changed after the amendment and the defence could not look at a judge as a normal person but as a judge trained in law and capable of deciding matters without prejudice.
