Legal fratenity mourns Justice Phiri Chief Court Reporter A sombre atmosphere engulfed the judiciary and the legal fraternity following the death of High Court judge, Justice Clement Bigboy Phiri, on Sunday at his home in Marondera. He was 60. Chief Justice Luke Malaba led the judiciary and the legal fraternity in paying tribute to Justice Phiri, for his immense contribution to the development of the law in the country. He expressed his profound condolences to the Phiri family on the passing on of their loved one. “An astute, but unassuming judge, he will be fondly remembered for his immense contribution to the development of the jurisprudence of Zimbabwe in the 34 years he was in the justice delivery system,’’ said the Chief Justice Malaba. ....

Government is pleased with the zero tolerance to corruption stance taken by the judiciary in the country. And the government has called on other stakeholders to emulate the judiciary on assuming the zero tolerance to corruption stance. Southern Province Minister Edify Hamukale commended the judiciary for taking a leading role in fighting corruption. Dr. Hamukale said other stakeholders should support the judiciary for it to achieve its goal. He has meanwhile cautioned stakeholders to desist from inducing magistrates and other officers in the judicial system to engage in corruption. The Provincial Minister said this in a speech read for him by his Permanent Secretary Mwangala Liomba in Livingstone today during the ceremonial opening of the criminal sessions at the Livingstone High Court. ....
