Immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Walter Nkanu Onnoghen, did not know he was stirring an hornet’s nest when he reflected on circumstances that surrounded his unceremonious removal in 2019.
Speaking during a dinner to mark his 70th anniversary at his residence in Asokoro, Abuja, recently, the former CJN said he was surprised at his sudden removal, noting that throughout his judicial career, he lived an upright life.

Removal: Nobody told me my offence, says ex-CJN Onnoghen

The immediate-past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, has expressed surprise about how he was suddenly told that he had been removed from office without doing any wrong.
He did not name the personalities involved in the drama.
Onnoghen said nobody told him anything about his offence when he was told that he had been removed.
Onnoghen, who clocked 70 on Tuesday, his projected retirement day if he had run his tenure as the CJN and judicial career in full, spoke at a low-key birthday dinner held at his Asokoro, Abuja home. ....

Ex-CJN Onnoghen marks quiet 70th birthday on projected retirement day

The immediate-past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, clocked 70 on Tuesday, the day he would have retired if his tenure had run in full.
He marked the birthday with a few guests on his premises in Asokoro, Abuja, in the absence of the great pomp that would have characterised such an event involving a retiring CJN.
Onnoghen’s tenure as the CJN and his career on the bench was cut short by a controversial ex parte order issued by the Code of Conduct Tribunal in January 2019 preparatory to his trial on charges of non-declaration of assets. ....
