The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has reacted to the swearing-in of Justice Akon Ikpeme as the Chief Judge of Cross River State.
Mrs Ikpeme was sworn-in by Governor Ben Ayade on Monday, 10 months after she was rejected by the Cross River House of Assembly.
The Chairman of the NBA, Calabar Branch, Paul Ebiala, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), said Mrs Ikpeme’s confirmation and swearing-in was divine. ....

Cross River bows to pressure, confirms Ikpeme as chief judge

After 13 months of being stubborn Cross River state executive and House of Assembly, yesterday, bowed to pressure by confirming Justice Akon Ikpeme as Chief Judge (CJ).
Since retirement of Justice Michael Edem in November 2019, Cross River has remained without a substantive chief judge, following disagreement between the state government and the National Judicial Council (NJC).
The NJC wanted due process followed and the most senior judge appointed as CJ, but the state government wanted its favourite candidate, a junior judge, to emerge.
Governor Ben Ayade had in November 2019, after much pressure, sworn-in Justice Ikpeme, being the most senior judge, as acting chief judge. But three months after the expiration of her acting tenure, the House of Assembly, through alleged manipulation by the executive arm, declined to confirm Justice Ikpeme on grounds that she is from Akwa Ibom State and will constitute a security risk despite the fact that she is married to a Cross R ....

Cross River State House of Assembly on Thursday confirmed Justice Akon Ikpeme as Substantive Chief Judge of the state after rejecting her twice in 2020.
Vanguard learned that her rejection was based on her being a ‘security threat’ to the state.
Ikpeme who had been screened in 2020 was not confirmed by the state House of Assembly as she was rejected twice, with two of her junior colleagues serving in an acting capacity for about one year.
Ikpeme was however not present at the floor of the house during her confirmation on Thursday Morning. ....

Cross River Assembly to confirm Justice Ikpeme as substantive chief judge

The Cross River State House of Assembly has scheduled to confirm Justice Akom Ikpeme as Substantive Chief Judge of the State on Thursday, January 28, 2021.
Newsmen gathered that all machineries have been put in place to confirm Justice Ikpeme following the refusal of the National Judicial Council to extend the acting tenure of Justice Eyo Effiom.
Justice Eyo Effiom Ita acting capacity expired on Monday January 18th 2021. Justice Akon B. Ikpeme has acted as Acting Chief Judge of the State for three months, followed by Justice Maurice O. Eneji, who acted for six months while Justice Eyo Ita acted for three months. ....
