The free event was open to all students. The prison abolition movement seeks to reduce or eliminate the prison system. According to the New York Times, abolition means not just the closing of prisons but the presence, instead, of vital systems of support that many communities lack. During the virtual stream, Mendieta recounted his time with Angela Davis, political activist, and how she shaped his views on prison abolition. Mendieta described what he called the âpolitical, psychic, social and symbolic economy of the prison-industrial complex.â Politically, Mendieta said prisons âmassively disenfranchise African Americans and other racial minorities.â Psychologically, âwe enable a routine of denial,â Mendieta said. âOut of sight, out of mind. Those are not our problems. They are criminals.â ....
The Restorative Justice Initiative at Penn State hosted political activist and scholar Angela Davis as the keynote speaker to kick off its Justice Education Week program. Davis is a civil rights advocate, author and professor at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The event was moderated by Kathryn Belle, Efrain Marimon and Divine Lipscomb. The moderators guided Davis talk by asking questions from the Zoom chat and previously submitted questions. Davis discussed issues within the United States prison institution regarding race, class, feminism and systemic oppression. Sitting on the HUB-Robeson Center lawn in 70 degree weather on a sunny April wellness day, student Natasha Nybro lounged without worries of what the final month of the semester would bring. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Penn State decided to cancel spring break. To compensate for the break, the university instated three wellness days throughout the spring semester, with the final one on April 7. âThe last wellness day when we had really nice weather was the best day of my life,â Nybro (junior-accounting) said. Nybro said she spent the first two wellness days catching up on classwork, and it wasnât until the final day when she noticed herself truly taking a pause from school. ....

From April 19-24, Justice Education Week will be held at Penn State. The week will feature a series of virtual events with the aim of bringing awareness to the human impact of incarceration as well as build support for transformative educational movements in a carceral setting, according to Penn State News.
