State Supreme Court Refuses To Delay Ranked-Choice Voting In NYC

Opponents of ranked-choice voting were dealt a major setback in State Supreme Court in Manhattan on Wednesday when a judge denied their request to block its use in an upcoming special City Council election next year. 
The new voting system allows New York City voters to pick up to five candidates in primary and special elections in order of preference, and tallies results so that the winner is only declared when a person has more than 50% of the vote. The special election set for February 2nd is to fill a vacant seat in the 24th City Council district in eastern Queens, with early voting scheduled to run from January 23rd - 31st.  ....

MTA puts off draconian cuts — Judge declines to block ranked-choice voting — Cuomo opposes special session to raise taxes

It won’t be doomsday for subway riders quite yet, after the MTA
approved a $17 billion budget holding off on the drastic service cuts it has threatened because of its pandemic-induced financial crisis.
Instead, the transit agency’s
budget assumes fingers crossed that it will get a $4.5 billion cash infusion from the federal government. That’s roughly the amount Sen. Chuck Schumer has been
trying to secure for the transit system in recent stimulus bill negotiations. So gone, for now, are the 40 percent reduction in subway service the MTA had proposed. If the money comes through, it would be enough to close the MTA’s deficit for 2021 but still leave an $8 billion deficit in the following years. If it doesn’t come through, the service cuts and large scale layoffs could be resurrected in the new year. ....
