Commenters criticize proposed IOTA rule amendments

Recommendations to change how The Florida Bar Foundation collects and distributes IOTA funds should be rejected or replaced by an alternative proposal, according to comments filed with the Florida Supreme Court.
February 10 was the deadline to comment on proposed changes to Florida Bar Rule 5-1.1(g), which governs the IOTA program. The amendments were submitted last September by the court’s Task Force on the Distribution of IOTA Funds.
A group of 26 past Foundation presidents submitted a “consensus” alternative rule that they said was endorsed by all of the other rule commenters. A group of 34 past Bar presidents specifically endorsed that alternative as well as comments from the Business Law Section, ....

Recognizing his efforts both in Florida and nationally, Hallandale Beach attorney Anthony C. Musto received the 2021 Tobias Simon Public Service Award, the state’s highest award for pro bono service.
Chief Justice Charles Canady presented the award in an online ceremony that also included presentation of The Florida Bar President’s Pro Bono Awards to circuit and out-of-state lawyers. Also honored were winners of the Young Lawyers Division Pro Bono Service Award, the Chief Justice’s Distinguished Judicial Service Award, the Chief Justice’s Distinguished Federal Judicial Service Award, the Chief Justice’s Law Firm Commendation, and the Voluntary Bar Association Pro Bono Award. ....

Judges, lawyers, and their judicial partners have worked diligently to respond to COVID-19, but a significant backlog of cases is looming, Chief Justice Charles Canady told lawmakers.
The chief justice and Clay County Court Clerk and Comptroller Tara Green, president the Florida Court Clerks and Comptrollers, delivered a pandemic update to a January 26 meeting of the House Judiciary Committee.
Justice Canady said that since March, the courts installed 1,700 Zoom licenses and conducted more than 400,000 videoconference hearings and other proceedings.
“Largely through remote proceedings, trial courts in Florida are on track to dispose of a projected 2.8 million cases in Fiscal Yea ....

Ball Janik in Orlando recently hired three brand new lawyers who had to be sworn in to The Florida Bar in various ways due to the pandemic.
Kasey Joyce was sworn in via video chat in her home during the Supreme Court’s December Virtual Induction Ceremony, presided over by Chief Justice Charles Canady.
Morgan Lester was sworn in by Judge John E. Jordan.
“This is a great day  for each of you as inductees and it is a great day for your families and your friends and everyone that helped you overcome the challenges and difficulties you faced along the way to this happy occasion,” Chief Justice Canady said at the virtual ceremony. “The special challenge brought on by the pandemic for this group of inductees were indeed extraordinary.
