After some uncertainty due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 Tim Hortons Brier is officially a go.
Canada s national men s curling championship begins on Friday, with 18 teams hitting the sheets in Calgary, Alta. Normally scheduled to take place with 16 teams, Curling Canada opted to expand due to COVID-19 impacting the majority of provincial/territorial championships.
Every province and territory will be represented with the majority of representatives selected without playdowns. The only ones to hold playdowns were Newfoundland and Labrador (Team Greg Smith), Northwest Territories (Team Greg Skauge), Nunavut (Team Peter Mackey) and Prince Edward Island (Team Eddie MacKenzie). ....

Canada s national women s curling championship begins on Feb. 19 with 18 teams hitting the sheets in Calgary, Alta. Normally scheduled to take place with 16 teams and two teams duking it out for a wild-card entry   Curling Canada opted to expand to ensure more than one game for the teams that normally would have played for the last spot because of the travel and COVID-19 protocols undertaken. It marks the first time in the tournament s 40-year history that the field has been expanded. ....

Finland wins Bronze Medal at 2021 IIHF World Juniors Championship

Team Finland has won the Bronze Medal at the 2021 IIHF World Juniors Championship after defeating Team Russia 4-1 in Tuesday afternoon’s Bronze Medal game. In Monday’s semifinal matches, Russia was shut out 5-0 by Canada and Finland lost 4-3 to the United States.
Finland came out slow, as the Russians were desperate to open scoring after the prior night’s shutout. They found the first goal despite good defense from Finland, six minutes into the period. Ilya Safonov was quick to bury a rebound from Maxim Groshev and put Russia up 1-0 early, with a 5-0 lead in shots. ....

USA wins Gold Medal at 2021 IIHF World Juniors Championship

Canada came into Tuesday night’s Gold Medal game the heavy favorites to win a second-consecutive World Juniors Championship. They’d gone undefeated in the six previous games, twice scoring in the double digits. Though USA Hockey had three shut outs in the tournament, they lost to Russia in the preliminary round, and had a close call against Finland in Monday night’s semifinal.
Once again, USA goaltender Spencer Knight was on the top of his game, making a perfect 34/34 saves. Canada didn’t make it easy on Knight, with a 34-21 shot share. Team USA was held to just six shots in the second period and one shot in the third, but Canada couldn’t break Knight. ....
