Senator Kiehl hopeful Senate will accept House PFD proposal, says votes are uncertain

Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - With the State House sending it's copy of the appropriation bill HB 3003 with a proposed $1,100 Permanent Fund Dividend going through the State Senate, Juneau Senator Jesse Kiehl said that he is hopeful that they will agree with the house's action so that Alaskans get a PFD this fall, but notes that Governor Mike Dunleavy's veto put that at risk.

Kiehl on Possibility of Veto Overrides While on Action Line

Juneau Senator Jesse Kiehl Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - What are the chances that the Legislature will override the Governor s budget vetoes when it convenes in the next special session on August 2? That question was put to Juneau Senator Jesse Kiehl on Action Line.  He figures garnering the three-quarters vote to override are slim to none.  I do think there s a possibility and  with the breath of vetoes this year, there s a possibility of reinstating some of the things he vetoed. Kiehl said there will be a new appropriation bill since the Permanent Fund Dividend needs to appropriated.  In addition, lawmakers could reinsert major maintenance money red lined by the Governor.

Hannan applauds Alaska's suit against PFAS manufacturers

KINY Juneau Representative Sara Hannan Juneau, Alaska (KINY) - Juneau s state House Representative, Sara Hannan, said she is very pleased about Alaska s lawsuit against PFAS manufacturers. We have been pushing for litigation against manufacturers for two years, said Hannan on Action Line. Gustavus, a town in her district, has groundwater tainted with PFAS. Across the nation, the cleanup costs are in the billions, said Hannan, adding that the state did not have the revenue to fund its own cleanup of PFAS without assistance from the manufacturers. Other states that have filed similar lawsuits won settlements, according to Hannan. Hannan and Juneau Senator Jesse Kiehl have both introduced bills relating to PFAS, their cleanup, and the health of Alaskans. We want to establish a lower standard than exists currently in regulations for what makes safe drinking water with PFAS, said Hannan. I would say no
