Kenya’s coastal region is set to benefit from a Sh3.2 billion programme with a focus on job creation and employment for young people and women.
This is after the European Union (EU) and the Government of Kenya launched the programme, dubbed Go Blue, yesterday.
The programme will be implemented in Mombasa, Kwale, Kilifi, Tana River, Lamu and Taita Taveta counties with the support of the coastal government initiative, Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani (JKP).
Go Blue combines job creation with integrated sea-land planning and management in coastal urban centres and their marine environment and also seeks to enhance maritime governance through effective law enforcement.

Coast governors are betting on revival of the cashew nut industry to improve livelihoods in the region.
The governors said the sector can boost standard of living for 350,000 farmer households in Kilifi, Kwale, Tana River, Lamu, Taita Taveta and Mombasa counties.
The governors pledged to transform the rural Kenyan coastal economy by increasing the crop’s production to over 300,000 metric tonnes worth Sh40 billion annually by 2030.

Factional politics and supremacy wars have stalled efforts of the Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani (JKP) established to scale up economic development of the Coast region.
Critics argue that failure by founders of JKP to involve residents at the grassroots levels and reliance on advice of the elite have contributed to a delay in realising the bloc’s vision.
They say the change of guard from founder chair Salim Mvurya (Kwale) to Taita Taveta governor Granton Samboja last Wednesday was insignificant.
