Thank you for having me. I spent, oh, months at the Truman Library about five or six years ago. I think the last time i stayed in kansas city was in 2000 for the Carnahan Ashcroft election. [laughter] one of the strangest events in the history of american politics. [laughter] glad to be back here again. [laughter] and i have to warn you that i may disappoint you, because im going to go around this in a kind of circuitous way. Let me say first something about how i came to write this book, because i kept having to ask myself as i was doing it why i was writing it.
