Charter school proposal afoot in Schenectady

Former Brooklyn educator eyes charter school in Schenectady | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS Shares0 Growing up in Detroit, Re’Shawn Rogers struggled mightily with school, not learning to read until high school, he said. But an educator long burned inside of him, and he remembers holding mock lessons on his front porch for his neighbors. “There has always been something inside of me that has said I’m going to teach something,” Rogers recalled in a recent interview. “I don’t know what it is, but I’m going to teach something. I always knew this was going to be my path.”

Foss: Move faster on restoring school programs

Foss: Move faster on restoring Schenectady school programs | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS It’s good to hear that the Schenectady City School District is starting to recall staff and discuss how to restore programming.  By now, the extreme measures the district took last fall to slash $28 million from its budget in anticipation of steep cuts in state aid are widely known.  Over 400 teachers, administrators and staff laid off. In-person learning for grades 7-12 eliminated. Pre-kindergarten classes suspended.  Five months later, the district’s actions look like a big overreaction to an uncertain, constantly shifting fiscal climate.   The much-feared cuts to state aid never materialized, and state budget officials have said that all aid payments for the current school year will be made in full.

Schenectady schools recall some laid-off staff; Potential first step toward returning slashed programs

Schenectady schools recall some laid-off staff; Potential first step toward returning slashed programs | The Daily Gazette SECTIONS The Schenectady school board on Wednesday recalled about two dozen laid off teachers and support staff to commence a pre-kindergarten program, the potential first step in re-establishing tens of millions of dollars in programs and staffing slashed at the start of the school year. Interim Schenectady Superintendent Aaron Bochniak said the district was confident it would receive all of its state aid this school year and could start calling back more staff as soon as next week. As the district restores programming, he said, educators will focus on increasing in-person learning opportunities, shrinking virtual class sizes and adding instructional supports like tutoring and other academic interventions.
