Juvenile minke whale has been put down after its condition deteriorated London: A juvenile minke whale that became stranded in London s River Thames has been put down after its condition deteriorated and vets decided it could not survive in the open water. The whale, measuring three to four metres (10-13 feet), was first spotted in southwest London on Sunday and was washed ashore at a set of gates controlling water flow. Rescue efforts by the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) service and firefighters failed when the whale slipped its leash and then swam upriver, instead of towards the sea. ....

(Photo : Getty Images) The Discovery On Sunday the 9th of May, the 3 meters (10-foot-long) whale calf was initially discovered confined inside a concrete lock in Richmond, London. Hundreds of people assembled to observe rescuers float the animal again and drag it out heading for deeper water, but the whale loose its balance from the balloon-like cushion it had been kept in and started to swim back away from the sea (upriver). ....

The whale had been spotted by a Reuters photographer swimming upstream in the Thames after rescuers had refloated it to save its life, but it became stuck again. Despite the efforts of rescuers from the Port of London Authority, Royal National Lifeboat Institute (RNLI), British Divers Marine Life Rescue, London Fire Brigade and the police, the whale was put down. ....

The calf had first got stranded on Richmond lock’s boat rollers on Sunday evening. It was finally freed by rescue teams around 1am but wriggled free from the inflatable rescue raft and went missing, before being spotted again in Teddington late on Monday morning. ....
